The (All-Purpose) Definition of MindfulnessMindfulness is the basic human ability to be fully present, aware of where we are and what we’re doing, and not overly reactive or overwhelmed by what’s going on around us. Mindfulness is a quality that every human being already possesses, it’s not something you have to conjure up, you just have to learn how to access it.

I dedicate 15 minutes daily to the practice of Mindfulness with my class. Students responded to this practice very well last year, and I am excited to build on it this year. Students will learn different methods of practicing mindfulness in order to help them become more aware of their feelings and thoughts as they are happening. Often children are not aware of their bodies and minds going off task, becoming overly emotional, or becoming filled with anxiety until they are overwhelmed. Mindfulness teaches them to be more aware of their thoughts and actions before they are at a tipping point.
We have started practicing with these cards. When the students come on from lunch recess, we turn the lights off, and sit on the rug. The students are very attentive and enjoy learning different methods of being mindful.
